Tangueros Anonymous is a not-for-profit company run by dancers who volunteer to share the organisation of dance events, classes and workshops.
We run these in cooperation with the Oxford Tango Club. Details about how the company is structured can be found here.
Our Argentine tango courses are taught in blocks of eight thematically matched classes and cost £4 per lesson.
To make learning easy, dancers are asked to sign up for a complete cycle (and pay in advance).
In between cycles we always run some drop-in classes so that you can try out if you like our style of teaching.
The classes are taught by Ben and Katja, and sometimes Fiona.
All three have come to know and love Argentine Tango as a dance which gives space to both partners in the couple to explore and to play,
to connect and communicate on a level not often experienced in everyday life, to get to know each other and ones own joy of movement -
and all that to the tones of some of the most fabulous music ever written for the dancefloor.
Ben and Katja started their tango life in Cambridge. People that have since especially influenced their dancing and teaching are Eric, Komala and Stefan from El Corte, Claudia Jakobsen, Chicho Frumboli, Homer Ladas, Alex Krebs, Biki and Muzo and Sebastian Arce and Mariana Montes. In their classes they focus on technique for improvisation and partner connection. Dance movements are taught to suit a busy dancefloor - we're not very keen on acrobatic kicking of fellow dancers. Step sequences feature occasionally, but only to momentarily illuminate principles.
Fiona has a background in modern dance. She is also trained in a variety of bodywork techniques such as Pilates or the Franklin Method.
If you have got some tango experience already but are not sure which class would be appropriate please write to the e-mail address given below. You might well be able to start experienced beginner or intermediate classes even if we are mid-cycle, but please let us know beforehand and don't just drop by (except when there is a drop-in scheduled).
Events which you are extremely welcome to drop by at are the practicas (£1) at the University Club. Practicas are there for you to work on your tango in a way that is not feasible in a milonga setting. That doesn't mean the evenings are joyless - quite the contrary: they are both fun and relaxed. Everybody is welcome to attend, but if you are a graduate or staff of the University it would be great if you could become a member of the club (which is free). If you are not, this is not a problem - please sign yourself in at the reception if asked.
We also have a monthly milonga. For dates please see the calendar below (you can click individual events for more information on location and duration). In addition to the regular schedule we organise workshops by visiting teachers which also appear on the calendar.
